Hello, hola, bonjour, etc :). I'm a 21 year old African-American woman nicknamed Mimi. I am in my senior year of college, majoring and minoring in subjects unrelated to web/graphic design. Poetry is my anti-drug and as previously stated in the welcome message, I'm pretty random. Are you intrigued?

Unrequested Website Reviews

People who write unrequested reviews are simply giving their input about a website. It becomes a problem when they’re written for the wrong reasons. Authors of unrequested reviews usually write reviews for one of two reasons: (1) they sincerely want to help someone better their site by giving their opinion or (2) they want to belittle someone (at least this is what I’ve witnessed) with their opinion.

I believe that intention is very key in writing an unrequested website review. If you’re doing it for positive reasons, I see no problem with it. I know a lot of people disagree and believe they’re totally uncalled for, but I propose a new way to view it. Restaurants, movies, books, music, etc get reviewed all the time. In most instances, these reviews are unrequested. Why should websites be an exception? Reviews are very useful. We do not know everything and could use some help from time-to-time.

If you’re doing an unrequested review for negative reasons then of course it shouldn’t even be written, especially when you do it in a condescending manner. Some people get enjoyment out of putting other webmasters down. Instead of discouraging people, I believe encouragement is key. While I do believe in “tough love”, you should always be tactful and respectful in whatever you do. Reviews are supposed to be helpful and full of constructive criticism, not destructive criticism.

Good article because before I even clicked this post I was going to say I think it’s rude to give an unrequested website review. I feel like owners should sign up for the review and I still believe that but I do agree with the intention part that you said.

I know personally I wouldn’t appreciate an unrequested review because if I want a review, I’d ask for one plain and simple. At least, though, if they’re going to give an unrequested review then I feel like the site owner should be contacted and given notice before the review is placed on the website.

Eh, unrequested reviews has seemed to have become a trend (but not a good one I think).

Your right, it should be written to help.

I totally agree. It’s so rude and stupid to just tell people their site sucks. If i do it, I keep it shourt and leave helpful links to program trials or something.

I agree. :) My blog is similar to ‘unrequested website reviews’, however; I just post the websites that inspire me. :)
