A few months ago I was walking to school and came across a man in a wheel chair. He was struggling to open up a door to a health center. Dozens of people had to have passed him and it made me upset that no one took a few seconds out of their precious lives to help this man. I opened up the door for him and held it open until he got in. It amazed me that people saw this and did not assist him. To make matters worse, there were security guards in the building, just looking on and not helping. I cannot believe that people are so inconsiderate nowadays. It saddens me…

During this same time period, I was riding the train home. The train made a stop and this young girl, with a baby, proceeded to board the train and accidentally hit a guy on the heel of his shoes with her stroller. He got so upset and proceeded to curse her out. I could not believe it. It is not like she intentionally did it and it is not like she caused him any physical harm. He cursed her out, calling her a dumb bitch and what not and I was appalled. It was very rude of him because she apologized to him as soon as it happened… but no, it was not good enough for him. He wanted to cause a scene.

Instances like those two occur on a daily basis and I become dumbfounded when I see this lack of manners. I just do not understand how people can ignore certain things (the man in the wheelchair) and act so cruelly. Where has the compassion gone? Where is the sympathy?

I cant even count how many times ive been in situations like you and the man in the wheelchair. It’s shocking to see who doesnt care or at least even try to help these people.

It’s really sad seeing people do these kind of things, we all have to live with each other. Come on, how hard is it to open a door for someone? Especially someone who is struggling to open it themselves. People need to think if they were in that situation, would they like someone to help them open the door?

But it makes me happy knowing there are people who would happily help others in need. :cute:

its unfortunate cause i see it too. we live in a world right now were people are less concerned with others because they are simply caught up in there own issues. i hate to see someone struggling and people just walk by or gawk and do nothing. i usually end up cursing out the people staring because i get so mad when people do that. it’s just flat out rude.

I think everyone’s to wrapped up in themselves this year and worring about their problems to even think, “Hey, my life could be worse,” or something along those lines. The economy is in the shitter and I find more and more people to be rude and nasty as the year has went on. I’m not saying it’s an excuse, but deffinitely something to think about. Personally, I see this kind of behavior everyday. People just don’t care any more about manners and it’s really sad.

People don’t care about others. They’re ungrateful and selfish. If it doesn’t benefit themselves, they aren’t interested. It’s funny how people can be so rude and then complain when it’s them in the situation. You reap what you sow!

People these days… and I do use ‘people’ heavily because it’s so many people who just do not care. I see things like this happen to, and still being in a high school, you could just imagine the kick kids get out of seeing someone disabled or in need. I’m confused because reactions toward such matters should be completely opposite. Hello everyone! We do have hearts don’t we?

I really can’t justify what goes on in other’s heads as to why some people lack manners and compassion. I really can’t.. bit it was very nice of you to help the man. We need more people like Mimi in the world :smile:

I have become beyond dumbfounded at instances such as the two that you mentioned, and I have given up at ranting and raving about it…because the truth of the matter is that it does no good. Why? Because society is too self-obsessed with itself to care about individual members! People are too concerned with the day-to-day happenings of their daily lives that they have lost all empathy that they might have felt for their fellow man, and so when they see something bad happening…they turn a blind eye to what has happened and think to themselves that if I don’t see what is happening, then it’s not really happening, and I don’t have to care about it. A horrible way to think…but perhaps that is what/how people are thinking…and perhaps the reason that the world is on a downward spiral?! Who knows?

WTF? Anytime I see someone in a wheel chair or having trouble I always help them. Like the other day, I was at the post office, and as I was walking out 2 women were carrying boxes and I held the door opened for them. I don’t get how people can be so cold-hearted. That saddens me to though. :sad:

Wow, he called her a dumb b? That’s just totally uncalled for, seriously. Why get yourself so worked up over nothing? Some people don’t think about trying to make the world a better place, yet only absorbed in their own selfishness.

World has gone meaner each year and to believe it or not, it’s not gonna be better – and I can even say it’s gonna be worse.

I help whenever I can. I do give my seat in a bus when somebody needs it. I do give a seat on a bus stop. It saddens me when a teenage girl or boy sits and pretends not to see what’s going around.

It’s disgusting how inconsiderate people of this country are (I haven’t been anywhere else, so I can’t say world, haha). I witness things like that too and it’s just really sad. Things that may only take someone 10 seconds, or less, to help out another human being and they won’t even do it. Ughhhh, awful.

I think it is so simpathetic that you helped the old man in the wheelchair out. I have a similar story:

I live in New York City, so I usually walk to work because I cant stand all the traffic jams. So, I was at the corner of Broadway street and there was an old man who looked about in his early 80s and he was struggling to get up the curb. There were hundreds of other people walking and standing besides me and no one helped him-they just looked at hyim. I was appalled. I walked over to him and helped him. I gave him so money so he catch a taxi instead. I was so upset that everyone besides me just looked at him. It was crazy.

I totally agree with you. What kind of soceity does the U.S. have now?

Yeap its pretty bad when other people see that someone clearly needs help and just ignores them. I think most people are just too self absorbed to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. If it were me in any of those situations I’d feel like crap that
A) noone could bother themselves to simply open a door
B) the dude started tripping and caused a scene over nothing

Hi, I can not believe that some people wouldn’t even help a poor, helpless, old man when he actually needs help just opening the door. Couldn’t they just take literally 1 minute to help him? That’s so sad. And the man who cursed the woman who ACCIDENTALLY hit him with a stroller, he WAS very rude. This happens everyday and I try to help as much as I can.

Yes, I agree with you here. i dont know what to make of it myself. It is just sad and hopeless. people are so self centered and cocky these days they think their God’s gift to the world and it really boils my water. As a person myself I just do what I can and be as nice as I possibly can to other ppl-even if theyre not nice to me I still go on being kind. thats basically all u can do =( i wish i was more…but its all we can do.

I know exactly what you mean. My coworker was once yelled at and called a bitch because she forgot to print out a gift receipt. Then this other time, there was a blind lady that came into our store to shop. I could tell she was wandering around aimlessly, struggling to shop, so my fellow customer service coworker took her by the arm and started walking around the store. When my coworker was paged back to customer service, she radioed the women’s department manager to ask if she could take over with assisting this lady. The manager radios back, annoyed, and goes “get Jennifer to do it, I’m busy.” I was shocked. Isn’t our motto supposed to be “the customer comes first”? And the fact that this was the manager saying that was even more appalling. People these days…

i don’t understand how it can be so hard to take 5 seconds out of your time to open up a door for someone. if that was them in that situation, they would get pissed.

Thats just really really sad. I mean I can’tfathom just walking by a person in need.
THis is a bit random but i saw a dog one time in the milddle of the street. there was something obviously wrong with him. I just drove by but I felt so guilty afterwards. I was lost but i managed tofind my way back to the street the injured dog was on. I called it’s owner and he came and got his dog. I just couldnt leave the dog jusst sitting in the middle of the street hurt.
Whenver i see old people or people in need i do my best to help them no matter what, I don’t think I could refrain from doing that… I’d feel so guilty

Yeah, that is really crazy. People think so much about themselves these days.
They act like they don’t know what to do or how to act in a situation, as if there parents never taught them. I know some people didn’t have their parents teach them, but you should figure it out on your own.
Everyone thinks I’m only about me, me, me and no one else. They don’t care about anyone else but them. They stay worrying about themselves when people probably have way bigger problems. It’s crazy.

OMG! That is really sad that people don’t care anymore. I’ve seen many situations where there are children who have lost there parents in the streets and they are actaully CRYING and nobody cares. They just walk past. This makes me really sad. People could at least ask what’s wrong or try and comfort them but no and some idiots even start laughing!
It is really apalling to see people’s attitude towards others and it’s good to know that there are some people who take a moment of there time to help those in need :cute:

Woooow. Some people are just not empathetic :blank: It’s unbelievable how some choose to make a scene just because of something small like that. He could’ve easily said that it’s okay and to be more careful. Cussing the lady was not necessary. Well, I’m glad that some people actually do help other people who are in need, even if they didn’t ask, like you. Those types of people are extremely rude. It’s always about their personal life, their time…etc.
It would take less than a minute to open the door, or to forgive the lady for slightly causing a foot pain.

This is what the world has come to, and it’s not pretty. o_O

i know how you feel. I see things similar to those two circumstances all the time here also.
Occasionally i see good people. One night in town my boyfriend was buying drinks and this guy backed into him, by accident and they both apologized, but i had no drink :/ (LOL) anyway the guy came up like 2 minutes later and gave my boyfriend the money for the drink. No one at all does things like that any more. It was so nice.

I know! I just read “I am the messenger”! A depressing book in a way, but it’s about this guy who helps people by doing little things (with help from an anonymous someone) and learns his life has meaning. It’s rather good, you should read it, but what it taught me is other people might not stop because it may seem like a small task, but it really makes all the difference, and changes their lives. Ever since I’ve read it I’ve been trying to reach out to others more, which is really what we all should do.

This type of situation is not uncommon at all. It hurts my heart to think that people collectively are so rude. When people are walking down the street, they figure that the next person will help him/her. There has been a study conducted on this type of behavior.

I, personally will help anyone in need of it, no matter how tight my time is. People need to come out of their world and join reality for a little bit.
